FAQ
Frequently asked questions
The most common questions about licensed online gambling in Portugal and about how this site works.
Legality and licensing
Is online gambling legal in Portugal?
Yes. Online gambling has been legal and regulated in Portugal since 2015 under the Legal Regime for Online Games and Betting (RJO), approved by Decree-Law no. 66/2015. Only operators that have obtained a licence from the Gambling Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ) may offer gambling to residents of Portugal.
What is the SRIJ?
The Gambling Regulation and Inspection Service is the online gambling regulator in Portugal, part of Turismo de Portugal, I.P. It issues licences, supervises operators, runs the central self-exclusion register and maintains the public list of licensed entities.
How do I check that a casino holds a valid licence?
Consult the register of licensed entities published on the SRIJ website and look for the licence holder and its number. Every review on this site states both and links directly to the official register. Licensed operators also display the SRIJ seal in the footer of their own sites.
Which licences do the operators on this site hold?
GoldenPark PT is operated by Azartia Games, S.A., holder of licence no. 030 for online games of chance and licence no. 029 for fixed-odds sports betting, both issued by resolution of 23 June 2023. Bacanaplay is operated by SKILL ON NET LIMITED, holder of licence no. 025 for online games of chance, issued on 23 October 2020 and extended for three years in October 2023. Both are listed in the public SRIJ register of licensed entities, and the PDF licence documents can be opened directly from each review.
Can I play on sites without a Portuguese licence?
We do not recommend it under any circumstances. Operators without an SRIJ licence are not supervised by the Portuguese regulator, do not participate in the central self-exclusion register, and offer no route of complaint to a national authority. The SRIJ actively blocks access to illegal sites.
Accounts, payments and tax
What documents are needed to open an account?
The law requires identity verification. You will typically be asked for a valid identity document (Cartão de Cidadão or passport), proof of address issued within the last three months and, in some cases, proof of the payment method. Verification usually takes between a few hours and 48 hours.
Which payment methods are accepted?
Operators licensed in Portugal typically accept MB WAY, Multibanco, Visa and Mastercard, bank transfer and, in some cases, e-wallets such as PayPal, Skrill or Neteller. All transactions settle in euros.
How long do withdrawals take?
It depends on the operator and the method. At the operators we have reviewed, withdrawals are processed between 12 and 72 hours once the account is fully verified. The first withdrawal is normally the slowest, because it involves document checks.
Are winnings taxed in Portugal?
Under the current framework, online gambling winnings from operators licensed in Portugal are not taxed in the player’s hands — the special online gambling tax is borne by the operator. This is general information and does not constitute tax advice; confirm your own position with the tax authority or a certified accountant.
Can I hold accounts with more than one operator?
Yes, provided each account is opened in your own name with truthful details. Opening multiple accounts with the same operator is prohibited and normally results in account closure and forfeiture of promotional balances.
Responsible gambling and protection
How does self-exclusion work in Portugal?
The SRIJ maintains a central self-exclusion register. Once you sign up, you are blocked from every operator licensed in Portugal simultaneously, for the period you choose. The request can be made online through the SRIJ website or with any licensed operator.
What limits can I set on my account?
Licensed operators are required to offer deposit limits (daily, weekly and monthly) and to display session time information. Many also offer loss limits, wager limits, temporary cooling-off periods and self-assessment tests. Limit reductions take effect immediately; increases are subject to a waiting period.
Where can I get help?
The SICAD helpline Linha Vida (1414) provides free, confidential support in Portugal. Internationally, GamCare, BeGambleAware and Gambling Therapy offer counselling and support groups. Links are available in the footer of every page.
Is there a minimum age?
Yes. Online gambling is strictly for adults aged 18 and over. Licensed operators verify age during registration and access by minors is prohibited by law. This site is likewise intended only for those aged 18 and over.
About this site
Is LusoPeak a casino?
No. We are an independent information publication. We do not accept bets, process payments, manage player accounts or pay prizes. All gambling takes place on the licensed operators’ own sites.
How do you make money?
Through affiliate commissions. If you open an account with an operator through one of our links, that operator may pay us a commission. It costs you nothing and the terms you receive are exactly the same. The detailed explanation is on our Disclosure page.
Do commissions influence your ratings?
No. Ratings come from a fixed scorecard of 28 criteria applied identically to every operator. No operator can buy a score, a position or the removal of a criticism.
How often are reviews updated?
Every review is revisited at least quarterly, and immediately whenever the operator’s licensing status changes in the SRIJ register. The date of the last update is shown on each review.
